Toxoplasmosis: Implications and Treatment
What are the implications for the future with this disease?
This disease is usually mild and no sequelae. Exceptionally there may be complications such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) or retinitis (inflammation of the retina).
When an infection occurs, the body reacts by producing antibodies against the parasite, which provides immunity to the same infection.
If a woman becomes infected during pregnancy can transmit the infection to the fetus (the risk is estimated at 20%, but varies according to length of gestation). Infection in the first trimester of pregnancy tends to be very serious for the fetus and often ends with a spontaneous abortion or serious illness in the newborn. Infection in late pregnancy usually does not cause specific symptoms, except the aforementioned retinitis. Read the rest of this entry »

How Do People Get Toxoplasmosis?
How do people get toxoplasmosis?
The two main routes are oral, and congenital and more rarely can be acquired through transfusions, organ transplants or accidents in the laboratory.
Cats eliminate a form of the parasite in the feces, called oocysts, which can remain viable in soil for many months. Under certain environmental conditions, the oocysts mature and form the so-called tachyzoites, which when ingested by a person, it can cause infection. Therefore, soil or food contaminated with cat feces can be a source of infection.
As in humans, in many other animals tachyzoites spread throughout the body and eventually forming in their tissues third form of the parasite we call tissue cyst. Ingestion of meat from an animal containing cysts, if undercooked, is also a source of infection. Read the rest of this entry »
Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma exists throughout the world. Birds, cats and other pets serve as a reservoir of the parasite and virtually all mammals can be infected by it. The cat is very important in the transmission of this disease.
In most of the people whose immune system is normal, Toxoplasma causes no illness as such but only an infection without symptoms. Subsequently, the parasite can stay in the body as cysts, causing a chronic infection that usually causes no consequences (even if there is an alteration of the immune system, the parasite could be “reactivated”). In these cases, treatment is generally required.
In humans, Toxoplasma can cause any of the following conditions: Read the rest of this entry »
