A surgeon will pose a silicone ring around the upper stomach. A tightening and loosening of the silicone ring is possible via a plastic tube connected to a device placed just under the skin.

The gastric band often lose about 40% of overweight patients on average very obese. Some people who have 90 extra pounds (compared to their healthy weight) can expect to lose weight about 40 pounds after placing a gastric band. However, results of weight-loss varies greatly from one patient to another.

The gastric band surgery is considered minimally invasive weight loss (creating fewer lesions in the body) and less dangerous. The procedure can be reversed (the gastric band can be removed) if necessary and in the long term, the stomach generally returns to its normal size.
