Malnutrition is a common problem in dialysis patients and is associated with a worse prognosis in terms of survival and a higher frequency of complications. The causes that give rise to multiple, but experts say it is not a simple malnutrition due solely to a lack of intake, but it involved the fact that chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dialysis was associated with increased catabolism and wasting calories and protein (protein-caloric wasting). That is, patients on dialysis often suffer from consumption of protein reserves in the form of muscle and calories, a situation that worsens their prognosis.

With the goal of advancing early detection of the causes of malnutrition – that will also measure the evolution and effects of the therapy – a medical team of Nephrology Department Hospital General de Segovia examined levels of thyroid hormones involved in metabolism (T3L, FT4 and TSH) in 32 patients (24 on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis 8). This research team proceeded to the measurement of hormone levels in patients, applying this novel technology known electrical bioimpedance vector, as the authors note that this work, it helps to diagnose body composition in these patients and the nutritional values classics.

Conclusions

The results showed that “50 percent of dialysis patients is a decrease of T3L with no thyroid disease and also T3L levels are related to other parameters of nutrition and especially muscle mass as both classical techniques and new technologies such as bio-impedance.

Therefore “we T3L levels may serve as a marker of muscle breakdown is occurring, allowing early action and monitor the response obtained with the different therapeutic measures,” Kammen General Hospital of Segovia.
