Your gums will benefit if you lose weight | Periodontal Disease
Remember that periodontal disease affects the gums, which are the backbone of your teeth. This condition is caused by bacteria in plaque, which if not removed by proper oral hygiene (brushing and daily flossing), causing hardened tartar or calculus which produce irritation and inflammation of the gums.
As the disease progresses, the bacteria penetrate and can eventually cause the collapse of the tooth. It is therefore essential that if you have periodontal disease, receive treatment to prevent this from happening.
There are different types of periodontal disease:
- Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums that causes them to bleed easily. This is the first stage of periodontal disease and at this stage people usually have no symptoms. If you receive specialized treatment and good oral hygiene practices, can be cured.
- Light Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not cured, then the bone and tissue that hold teeth begin to destroy.
- Advanced Periodontitis: As the name implies, occurs when not avoided, and causes a loss of significant bone and tissue, causing tooth decay or making it necessary to draw (you get them out).
The best way to prevent gum disease is taking care of your oral health with a good brushing after eating, flossing and regular visits to your dentist. Remember that the health of your mouth is linked to the health of your body.
