Not many people associate oral health with overall health. However, it says that the mouth is an indicator of how it is working everything in your body. A study was published recently in the Journal of Periodontology states that losing weight can help fight gum disease or periodontal disease. Another reason to look after your health holistically.
The study looked at 31 obese people who received treatment for their gum or periodontal treatment. Half of this group underwent gastric bypass surgery (or gastric bypass) which is designed to cause weight loss. The remaining group not subjected to such surgery.
Interestingly, those who had undergone surgery to lose weight, showed significant improvement in the health of their gums, not only reducing inflammation, but also reducing plaque and bleeding. According to the authors of the study, specialists of the Case Western Reserve University, this may be due to “reductions in insulin resistance and inflammation associated with weight loss.”
